Pour se lancer dans la Culture de Banks...

... il faut commencer par lequel ?

Je tente de combler petit à petit ma lacune dans le domaine du space-op', avec lequel j'ai vraiment beaucoup de mal. Alors j'essaie quand même : merci d'avance pour vos conseils !

Je ne suis pas Banksophile donc je pense ne pas me laisser emporter par l'enthousiasme en parlant de la Culture :)

Amha, la meilleure introduction au cycle qui met bien en place la civilisation culturelle, c'est l'homme des jeux. Puis j'enchainerais avec l'usage des armes

En 1, L'usage des armes, en 2 pas très loin, Le sens du vent
Puis L'homme des jeux, très bon mais amha un cran en dessous.

Je ne suis pas vraiment Banksophile non +, mais j'ai beaucoup aimé L'homme des jeux (à partir de la page 150 à peu près...). Les autres que vous citez... beaucoup moins. Dsl pour ceux qui aiment, mais vraiment j'ai du mal.

Moi je l'ai découvert avec L'usage des armes, la claque. Du coup, les deux autres que j'ai lu, Une forme de guerre et L'homme des jeux m'ont un peu déçu malgré de très bonnes idées. Ce sont de bon romans, mais un large cran en dessous de L'usage des armes. C'est peut-être pour cela que je n'en ai plus lu d'autres de ce cycle.

J'ai tendance à penser qu'il faut les lire dans l'ordre chronologique de l'épopée à savoir:

1. Une forme de guerre (même si paru après l'Usage des armes je crois bien)
2. L'Homme des jeux
3. L'Usage des armes
4. Excession
5. Inversion
6. Le sens du vent
Il y a aussi l'Etat des arts (3bis) mais difficile à trouver et c'est plutôt une novella.

Personnellement par manque d'info j'ai procédé un peu n'importe comment... (5 à sa sortie puis 2, 3, 1, 4 et 6). Je suis certainement passé à coté de deux ou trois allusions à la Culture quand j'ai lu Inversion mais cela ne m'a pas géné. J'ai pris ce bouquin pour du mainstream.

Pratiquement tous peuvent se lire séparemment mais comme les néologismes sont fréquents chez Banks , il n'est peut être pas judicieux de tous se les prendre en commençant par Excession par exemple.

Sinon, Je rejoins complétement Gylles (comme souvent soit dit en passant ) pour son ressenti face à l'épopée.

If you start with one of those two you probably will be fine. UoW is not generally recommended (although some people here will probably argue with that) because it needs some background. EXCESSION relies to even a greater extent on knowing about Culture Minds, though there are some people here who started with that without problems.

As for what the Culture is: well, keep in mind that although there are no plot spoilers here it will alter the impact of CONSIDER PHLEBAS advocated by the "read-CONSIDER PHLEBAS-first" faction.
